KINDERMOVES is beginning classes in Sunbury this month in a bid to help encourage health and fitness among younger children.
The pilot program runs themed physical activity sessions that incorporate fitness elements, including cardiovascular activity, skill development, co-ordination and flexibility.
The program is run by Richard Little and John Tate, both qualified personal trainers and accredited instructors.
"To be active and engaged co-operatively in a range of activities encourages healthy development in children during the formative years," said Mr Little.
A 2009 study by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute highlighted the need for an exercise program for young people.
The report stated that the number of overweight and obese preschoolers increased by more than 8000 between 2004 and 2008. It said children were becoming overweight and obese because they spent more time watching television and less time being physically active.
Kindermoves sessions will run each Tuesday for five weeks at the Sunbury Recreation Centre, beginning on February 23.
